By Jaded Avaricious , October 27, So as my Topic states, what exactly is the meaning behind this song. Marcus Mumford explained that “It’s a very personal story, so I won’t elaborate upon too much. Suffice to say, it was a situation in my life I wasn’t very happy with or proud of… and sometimes when you can’t describe a feeling with your own words, it’s almost easier to express in a song. And then, when you get asked about the songs, it’s quite difficult to explain.

It’s a conundrum”. Suffice to say that these words make it all the more interesting, something that needs unraveling. Through all the demons you have faced together and worked through, you have lost the corage to talk about problems in your relationship with your partner. Don’t waste the time that you have been given on perfecting your life and relationship. Courage could also be referring to liquid courage meaning alcohol which can alleviate problems as well as cause them, so this can be a double meaning.

This song was the first single released from the band’s debut album Sign No More, which was released in Marcus Mumford has come out and said the song is personal to him, and is a self assessment of the mistakes he made during a failed relationship. The song begins with Mumford telling himself he has not lived up to his own expectations and that he is “not as brave as you were at the start”, which indicates that many times when people initiate a relationship, they attempt to show off the best qualities or versions of themselves, but eventually their true character comes through.

The chorus is Mumford’s confession to his partner of how badly he damaged the relationship. He goes on to berate himself in the second verse as well saying, “You know that you have seen this all before” meaning that he has ruined previous relationships with the same posturing and self-aggrandizement that has brought him to this point.

Only since the release of the Delta album last year did frontman Marcus Mumford give some explanation about them. Before that, we just had to make do with vague hints. Since the British folk-rock band is currently on their Delta Tour and visiting many festivals this summer, and since nothing makes the experience of a concert as intense as when you know what an artist is actually singing about, I have taken on the challenge of interpreting their music.

They have also won many prestigious awards , were allowed to perform with none other than Bob Dylan during the Grammy Awards in and played for Barack Obama in the White House. On top of that, they have left lasting impressions on the audience at the festivals where they headlined. It was supposedly chosen because Marcus Mumford was the most prominent band member in the early days and because the vibe of the name was that of an old-fashioned family business.

Essentially, it narrates a broken heart when reflection begins to take hold.

The lover who has lost everything delves into the darker side of life and makes that attempt to wonder what the fuck happened. Mumford breaks himself down in this song. In the folk music sense, Mumford makes a point of putting his feelings on the table without revealing the true reason behind his ilk. MumfordandSonsLust 14,, views General CommentI think this song is about a father talking to his son. When things don’t go right it is easy to blame the negativity on others or the situation. I hear a grown man who’s reflecting on his life. This song is about a man realizing that his relationships fail because of his inability to be a good partner. I totally agree about the Tyrion Lannister explaination. This song represents modern relationships. All lyrics provided for educational purposes only.
